As you should know if you are an international student in Australia, it is possible to choose to do a paid job with time limitations, right?
Well, if this condition suited you, we tell you that now we have much better news. In light of the pandemic, though, the Australian Department of Home Affairs and Australian Border Force announced that:
International students can work more than 40 hours per fortnight if they’re working in specific industries. 🎉!
Currently, the amount of working hours for international students is 40 hours per fortnight during the study period, and unlimited hours during breaks and holidays, but this panorama has changed, and it greatly benefits students working in risk areas 💥.
Previously, international students were only allowed to work more than 40 hours per fortnight during the semester, when they were support for personnel in health sectors 🏥, however we tell you that now more sectors have been added.
Where can international students work extra hours on their Australian student visa?
Employed by an aged care Approved Provider or Commonwealth-funded aged care service provider with a RACS ID or a NAPS ID, before 8 September 2020.
Employed by a registered National Disability Insurance Scheme provider.
Enrolled in a healthcare-related course and you are supporting the health effort against COVID-19, as directed by health officials.
Employed in the agriculture sector.
The condition to be able to work more than 40 hours per fortnight, apart from being part of these industries, is that you must have a valid student visa (undergraduate and graduate), that way you will have no problem working the hours indicated and that the establishment where you go to work is enabled to deliver this benefit (more information about this visit the home affairs page, since conditions apply).
The Australian government is constantly reviewing the pros and cons of these measures, so we always recommend being informed of these updates.
How can international students apply for extra work hours in Australia?
As stated by the Department of Home Affairs,“Student visa holders do not need to apply for this temporary measure.” However, you may need to contact individual employers within the specified industries to check if they have work available.
